October 2024 /// Madjo Rice

After graduating in the class of 2022 at SUNY Geneseo, she did a year of AmeriCorps in Rochester and continued to work in Geneseo where she later became the Gallery Manager at the Gallery in the Valley. Her work is highly personal and usually sprouts from her artistic process of writing letters she has no intention of sending. This self-care practice helps her work through tough emotions and inspires many of the visuals in her illustrations and paintings. While her art is highly personal, Madjo’s professional life is focused around finding and organizing community through creative expression. With a local art scene as rich as the Genesee Valley, Madjo hopes to provide a space for community, creativity, and collaboration.

June 2024 /// Alexander Fals
MEDIUM /// FORAGED PIGMENT PAINTINGS
From a lineage of artists, scholars, and revolutionaries for social justice, Alexander Fals is a genre all his own. His paintings are not just wall hangings, but windows into a magical world where all things have beauty and mystery. The mineral pigments he uses are colors that have been underground in ancient volcanic deposits, lying dormant for centuries. Each color has a unique mineral composition, many of which are naturally flecked with Mika, stones and crystals. Born in Naples NY, 1990, to mother Lauren Sherwood (Naples, NY), and father Roberto Fals (Popayán, Colombia), Alexander spent his seventeenth year as an exchange student living with his Grandfather, Dr. Jaime Fals Borda, in Colombia. He then returned to New York to study Environmental Conservation and Ecology at Finger Lakes Community College. After leaving school in 2011, Fals decided to blend his love for ecology, evolution, and Colombia. He moved to Popayan and began painting, using a technique regionally pioneered by his Uncles, Henry and Billy Fals: foraging for vibrant naturally occurring pigments and processing them into paint using a strong yet biodegradable adhesive.

April 2024 /// Kim Binaghi Lee

During this time she also held art classes through Very Special Arts New York and taught after school art classes for children. March 2024 /// Julia Parrino & Isabella Fluker
MEDIUM /// CERAMIC, PRINTMAKING, CROCHET SCULPTURE
Julia Parrino and Isabella Fluker are longtime friends that hail from Tampa, Florida. Their show "Buds in Bloom" welcomes spring with bright colors, expressive designs, and playful whimsy.
Isabella studied animal welfare and behavior at NYU, and graduated in 2021. She started crocheting during the pandemic as a way to keep her hands busy, and found her passion in making these little dolls she calls Babas. Babas have an anxiety reducing effect and multi-sensory qualities, and are made with the intention of assisting children and adults with controlling their anxiety.
As an artist who battles anxiety herself, she notes on the ways they have helped her:
"I find that they assist a lot when I am having difficulty in my day to day life. The best way to find peace with your baba would be to either count the amount of rows on their body when anxious or trace your finger in a swirl pattern around their body, following each row."
Julia studied Graphic Arts and Design at University of South Florida, St. Petersburg, and has been working locally on public art and murals since graduating in 2023. Julia's bright and intricate work centers nature, humor, and nostalgia. She works in a variety of mediums, but channels most of her designs through ceramics and printmaking. She gathers inspiration from the landscape of South Florida where she grew up and beautiful visions of her grandmother's Spanish style home, where bright colors and complex patterns decorate everyday life.

January 2024 /// Mike Wedge
MEDIUM /// PAINTING & SCULPTURE
Mike Wedge makes paintings and sculptures of everyday scenes, but with a dreamlike twist. The imagery in his work is often recognizable and naturalistic, but upon a more sustained viewing, odd situations emerge. Deer and foxes find themselves in the city, and traffic lights and parking meters appear in the woods. The dichotomy between the city and the country is a recurring theme in Mike's work.
After an idea for a piece is conceived, Mike uses photos of acquaintances to create reference collages. These collages are created using a variety of methods, including layering drawings on tracing paper, cutting and gluing printed photos, and making digital collages using pixlr. Surreal scenes of displaced people and animals result in Mike's artwork.
Mike Wedge received a BA in Sculpture from SUNY Fredonia, and a Master of Science for Teachers from RIT. He currently lives in Geneseo, NY with his wife, Natalie, and their 2 kids, Asher and Anjali. When Mike is not painting and sculpting, he is teaching elementary art.

November 2023 /// Michael Fambro
MEDIUM /// POLYMER CLAY EARRINGS
“My name is Michael (pronounced like the “traditionally” boy’s name), and I make polymer clay earrings. I worked in theater before coming to clay, and still remain a thorough theater nerd. I’m a playwright, an aspiring 90s sitcom connoisseur, and jazz history nerd. I love to read, buy books that I’ve yet to read, and buy books that I accidentally already read. My goals include: someday having a fleet of dogs. My leisure time includes: making lists of potential names for said fleet. My journey with polymer clay started when Miché Fambro, my beloved musician father passed. I inherited (musician kids will understand) $500 bucks and his immense record collection. I used the $500 for a bed in the back office for my Mom to come over and stay the night whenever she wanted. I couldn’t listen to Dad’s music, but I found that I could listen to the records, and it was a nice way to bond with Dad from afar. I would listen to an album while playing with clay. He introduced me to the deep tracks of Sonny Rollins, Duke Ellington, Bill Evans, Johnny Guitar Watson, so much Frank Sinatra I can’t count, underground punk of the 80s, so much classical, etc etc etc etc. Listening to these albums, and every time working with clay while I did - I got pretty good by record #43, really good by #67 and by the time I got to #103, I had so many freakin’ earrings I had to figure out what the hell to do with them. So, I decided to pick up the ol’ family trade and sign up for a festival. I couldn’t believe it - people actually were buying them. Things I made with my own hands! To wear on their body! They kept buying, I kept making, and now it seems I have a little business called Jazz House. ” - Michael

July + August 2023 /// Terry Weber
MEDIUM /// NEEDLE-FELTING
Terry Weber graduated many years ago with a BA in Art from Saint Mary University, Leavenworth, KS. After a few years of teaching in Denver, Colorado, Terry returned to WNY and embarked on various art media activities, including basketmaking, pottery, all forms of painting, and, for the past 14 years, wet and needle felting. The artwork created by Terry can be viewed at the Bethany Arts and Antiques Shop, located on Route 63 in East Bethany.
Having been captivated by 3D artwork since the pottery days in college, Terry found a creative outlet in wool felt making, satisfying the desire to work with texture and form. The process of creating wool paintings begins with a wet felted background, which is then embellished with needle-felting to shape and accentuate the design. Top stitching is added for further detail, while color blending is achieved using hand-held carders and a variety of colors to create a palette of subtle shades. Vibrant bursts of pure color are strategically placed to draw attention to the focal point of each painting.
In addition to Terry's passion for Painting with wool, visitors to the shop can witness the creation of soft sculpture needle-felted critters. Terry specializes in crafting a menagerie of bunnies, ponies, birds, gnomes, and more recently, Trees! Terry invites everyone to enjoy the showcase of artwork and encourages them to visit the shop, conveniently located just 18 miles west of Geneseo. The shop offers a wide selection of antiques and gifts.

April 2023 /// Steven Berger
MEDIUM /// PAINTING AND PRINTMAKING
Steven Berger has been a lifelong artist. A native of Geneseo, NY, he graduated with an A.A. in Visual Communications in 1989 from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and with a B.F.A. from R.I.T. in 1996. Soon after graduation from RIT, Steve opened his own successful jewelry store in Lakeville, New York; he later relocated to Geneseo. After 15 years as a jeweler, he went back to college (University of Rochester) to earn his B.S. and become a registered nurse. Steve currently works as a nurse for OPWDD.
Nevertheless, his interest in visual arts never faded. He works in original prints, watercolors, and paper art. Western New York is filled with waterbirds and songbirds, sunflowers, and unique tree formations, so there is much to admire and inspire. During the pandemic, he discovered that walnuts, when opened up, have unique faces, which then culminated in his whimsical “W[e’re] al[l] nuts” series. In addition, his lifelong appreciation of the trees on Nations Road and Temple Hill Cemetery in Geneseo led to the print series showcased here.

“I am originally from Southern California. Until recently, my work has focused on portraits and the nude figure. After years of living in various cities across the country, my wife Elizabeth and I wanted a change in lifestyle. While visiting family in Geneseo, we fell in love with its verdant countryside and decided that this was where we wanted to be. The oil paintings in this exhibition represent my first attempts at capturing the beauty that surrounds our new home. Each scene depicted can be found in the fields and woods around Nations Road in both Avon and Geneseo.”

August 2022 /// Shawna Apps
Shawna Apps
MEDIUM /// WATERCOLOR AND OIL PAINT
"I have always seen the world different from those around me. To me, the grass isn't green, the sky isn't blue, the animals aren't just animals. Instead, I see a variety of colors that shift moment-by-moment in the landscapes and in the animals that have their own individual personalities. I incorporate this into my art in many ways, from giving animals expressive eyes that seem to communicate with their viewers, to partially mixing greens to emulate subtle differences in the landscapes, to using multiple colors to capture each sky.
We live such fast-paced lives that we overlook the beautiful world surrounding us. We miss out on watching ocean foam play on the sand at the beach, the changing colors of the sunset, the different personalities of birds playing in the yard. It is my goal to connect viewers to the world around them so they can rediscover its beauty. And if even one viewer is inspired to slow down and do that, I have succeeded in my work.” - Shawna

April 2022 /// GamiFold (Sarah Haehn)
GamiFold (Sarah Haehn)
MEDIUM /// ORIGAMI
“It all started off with an art kit, and then it turned into a love; The love of folding origami paper. My name is Sarah Haehn, and I create origami art. I have been folding origami for about seven years in the city of Rochester NY. The folding process for myself started off being very basic. I would watch youtube videos to learn how to do basic folds, and instructional videos to make forms. Until one day, it just clicked! I then decided to try other forms, than just animals. I started to learn how to make different kinds of geometric shapes. The shapes, that are used mostly in my work are triangles and squares. These shapes are the two major components for an origami base. I tend to use brightly colored solid paper in my pieces, rather than patterns. I believe this gives the art more of an impact. I also enjoy trying new things within my art. For example, when I create an origami canvas wall art piece, I sometimes use other objects, like chopsticks, or spoons! This makes each piece unique and fresh. I tend to gravitate making things into mass quantities of origami and inanimate objects. I feel like seeing things in masses are very appealing to the eye. I have sought out inspiration by seeing other artist work, and by being a floral designer. I have always really enjoyed the aspect of 3D art. The one artist who really influenced myself to create the way I do is, Ran Hwang. She creates art by using masses of pins and buttons that she hand creates. I hope to be fortunate enough one day, to see one of her art installation pieces in a gallery. By creating the origami art that I do, I hope I can spread that enjoyment to other people by seeing my pieces.” - Sarah

Watercolor artist Jennifer Greenman has been painting for over ten years, having studied at SUNY Geneseo and FLCC in Fine Arts. Although an experienced artist, she recently started selling her work under the name “Evergreenman,” a play on her last name and her love of painting alpine scenes.
Jennifer aims to push pause on the over-stimulated viewer, to recognize that we live in dramatic landscapes. Landscapes that are emotionally driven in color and as ever-changing as our creator made them. As a photographer does with their camera, Jennifer hopes to capture a moment and allow the viewer to stop and see. To see the profound beauty of the world we live in, which should not be desensitized to our eyes.

Erin Hanafin Sweeney
MEDIUM /// ACRYLIC PAINT AND MIXED MEDIA
“I’m a painter and mixed media artist based in Geneseo, NY. I co-own Little Lakes Framing with my husband, Raff. My background is in printmaking, but in 2020, I dove into painting with acrylics. This past year has given me space to develop my style, so there is a clear shift as my graphic, woodcut-inspired paintings begin to soften a bit. Inspired and delighted by the landscape in Western New York, color, contemporary design, and absurd kitsch, I create pieces that make me happy. My intention is for my work to convey the character and comfort of vintage illustration, viewed through a bold, contemporary lens. As I’m making them, my paintings bring me to a place where I can feel the fresh air in my lungs, the sun on my cheeks, and the looming judgement of a grumpy woodland rabbit. My hope is for my work to bring a sense of levity and joy to the viewer too.” - Erin

MEDIUM /// COLORED PENCIL / BALLPOINT PEN / WATERCOLOR
“I am a visual artist residing in Geneseo, New York. I like to think of myself as a crafter of visual stories. I attempt to create drawings that provide more questions than answers, more ambiguity than certainty. My intention is to leave the viewer with an open ended narrative that allows one to fill in the blanks from their own personal experiences. I work primarily in Colored Pencils, Watercolor, and Ballpoint Pen, exploring the theme of the contradictions and opposing forces found in everyday life. I strive to find meaning in the dual realities that push us in varying directions, and to make connections between both the pivotal and mundane moments of life with the use of symbolism and simplicity.” -Mandi
